Year 2000 -- Blount County / Status:
Blount County has sent
out a letter asking for Church Schools to use their enrollment forms. This is
perfectly legal as the law states in Code
16-28-7.
The form should come from the superintendent or their agent.
The problem is the information they ask for on the form as well as a
small printed statement one is agreeing to when they sign it. The following is
under the Administrator's Signature.
"By my signature, I understand and agree to the above requirements
set forth by the State of Alabama and the Blount County Board of Education
governing church school education procedures."
The form also asks for the child's SSN, which is not required by law and
many parents refuse to give them this information.

August 2000 -- Marshall County /
Status: Resolved
Marshall County has been an
interesting study in bad judgment and
bizarre reasoning. You can read the original
letter from Mr Tuggle (the attendance officer of Marshall County) to church
schools, the reply from both South East Law Institute and HSLDA. There is also a
reply back from Mrs Noel, the superintendent of Marshall County.
It is sad when a system that so obviously cannot educate and protect the
kids already in their systems must harass those who have removed their kids. To
put into question the legitimacy of a church and their ministries, i.e. their
school, makes one wonder if these folks have more time on their hands than they
can handle legitimately and therefore must find folks to harass. Do they not
know the Laws of our country? How about the foundations of our country? Has this
fact simply vanished from their minds as they pursue those of us who do not
allow them authority over our kids and the educational process? Why must we
constantly be on guard against those "experts" who seem to think we
are totally inept and idiotic by the virtue of being a parent coupled with the
astounding fact we are ALLOWED to educate our kids without input from THEM!!!
Maybe many in Marshall County need a refresher course in US History and maybe
even an original reading of the Constitution, as well as the Laws of Alabama
concerning the exemption of church schools from the meddling of the State and
their henchmen. Or even a reading of the religious freedom LAW we have here that
a mere policy does not change because one person decided "some" church
schools are making money, or "some" homeschoolers aren't educating and
in fact may be encouraging truancy. My thought is............... SO? Do not PS
systems make money?? Isn't an American free to put their money where they want
to? And since the Dept of Education has said that 25% of our graduating seniors
are functionally illiterate, it seems SOMEONE is not educating our children AND
and it isn't Homeschoolers!!!! Maybe a child is truant because they are so durn
sick of the system treating them like idiots, abusing the power they have and
having to ask for permission to simply go to the bathroom! Sounds like a double
standard to me. We all need to be aware of what "they" ask from us,
often even when it seems to be a simple or innocent request. "They" do
not want to work alongside us while we educate our children, but would rather be
in control of the process. If we are told to use certain curriculum, are
required to be certified, use testing and grading, and only during school
hours--what do we have then??????????? Hint: It's already failed - it's already
destroyed many children and minds - it believes it's above the law and in charge
of all the kids - it's sole reason for being is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ not
education.
